Overview
Italy's Ministry of Foreign Affairs publishes visa information and the harmonized Schengen form at vistoperitalia.esteri.it, with the actual online application system at e-applicationvisa.esteri.it. You fill out the form yourself, then book an appointment — either directly with the Italian consulate, or with VFS Global, the company Italy has designated in most countries to collect applications and biometrics (VFS staff have no authority over visa decisions; that stays with the consulate). Using a VAC isn't mandatory in every location, and in some places you can go straight to the consulate instead.

Documents checklist
- Passport valid at least 3 months beyond your return date, with 2 blank pages

- Travel/health insurance valid across Schengen, minimum €30,000

Step-by-step application process
1. Confirm Italy is your main destination
If visiting several Schengen countries, apply where you'll spend the most time, or where your main purpose of travel takes place.
2. Complete the application form
Fill it out via e-applicationvisa.esteri.it or download the PDF from the consulate's site.
3. Gather your documents
Assemble everything from the checklist, organized with a cover sheet if applying through VFS.
4. Book your appointment
Book with VFS Global (if used in your country) or directly with the Italian consulate — appointment windows for summer travel fill up 4–6 weeks in advance.
5. Attend and give biometrics
Submit documents, provide fingerprints (unless given within the last 5–9 months for a Schengen application), and pay the visa fee.
6. Track your decision
Standard processing is 15 calendar days, up to 45 during summer peak.
