Overview
Introduced in 2019, the New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA) is mandatory for citizens of visa-waiver countries and territories (around 60 of them) before they fly to or transit through New Zealand — it isn't itself a visa, but a pre-travel screening layered on top of visa-free entry. It's genuinely self-service: apply on the official website or the official NZeTA mobile app, pay a small fee, and receive approval within about 72 hours. The government explicitly warns that some third-party sites exist and aren't legitimate — always use the official channel to avoid being overcharged.

Step-by-step application process
1. Confirm you need an NZeTA
Use the "check if you need a visa or NZeTA" tool for your passport and travel type.
2. Apply via the app or the website
The app costs NZD $17 and can scan your passport and card automatically; the website costs NZD $23.
3. Complete traveller details
Enter your passport, contact and travel information, including your New Zealand accommodation.
4. Pay the fee (and the IVL, if applicable)
Most visitors also pay the International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy (IVL) alongside the NZeTA fee.
5. Receive your NZeTA
Approval typically arrives within 72 hours; apply at least 2 weeks before departure once your hotel is booked.
