Overview
Mexico's visa situation genuinely depends on your passport, and most travelers reading this fall into the easiest bucket. Citizens of the US, Canada, UK, EU, Australia, Japan, South Korea and more than 60 other countries can enter for tourism or business visa-free for up to 180 days — but every visitor, exempt or not, still needs the free Digital Tourist Card (FMM), a self-service online form run by INM (Instituto Nacional de Migración), not a visa. A narrow group of nationalities — Russia, Ukraine, and Turkish red-passport holders, plus some Peruvian transit passengers — can self-apply for the SAE electronic travel authorization instead of a full visa. Everyone else who isn't visa-exempt must apply at a Mexican embassy or consulate.

Step-by-step application process
1. Check your passport's status
Confirm whether you're visa-exempt, SAE-eligible, or need a consulate visa on the official INM site for your nationality.
2. Complete the Digital Tourist Card (everyone, if arriving by air)
Fill in the free online FMMd form before or shortly after arrival — airlines no longer distribute paper forms.
3. SAE applicants: apply online separately
Complete the SAE form, pay any applicable fee, and print your approval — valid for one entry by air only.
4. Everyone else: apply at a consulate
Contact your nearest Mexican embassy or consulate directly for the standard tourist visa process.
5. Print and carry your documents
Bring a printed copy of your FMM/SAE approval along with your passport when you travel.
