Overview
South Africa currently runs three separate channels for visa-required travelers, and confirming which one applies to you before paying any fee matters — the systems don't transfer a pending application between them. Most visa-required nationals use the eVisa, a fully online process through the DHA's own eHome Affairs portal: create a profile, complete the form, upload documents, pay, and receive your outcome — no consulate visit needed. A small number of nationalities (China, India, Indonesia and Mexico, as of the 2025–26 rollout) instead use the newer Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA), also self-service and online. Everyone else not covered by either system applies for a traditional visa directly at a South African mission or via VFS Global, still without needing a paid agent.

Documents checklist
- Passport valid for at least 30 days beyond your intended departure (6 months recommended for smoother processing)
- Two recent passport-sized photos, or a digital photo for the eVisa
- Proof of financial means (bank statements or salary slips)
- Proof of accommodation (hotel booking or host's invitation letter)
- Return or onward ticket
- Yellow fever certificate, if arriving from or transiting a yellow fever belt country
Step-by-step application process (eVisa)
1. Check which channel applies to you

2. Create your profile
Register at the official eVisa website — your profile stays active for 14 days.
3. Complete the online form
Enter your personal, contact and travel details.
4. Upload your supporting documents
Attach everything from the checklist above.
5. Pay online
Confirm your application with secure payment.
6. Track and receive your outcome
Monitor status through the ePermit portal; processing for the Visitor's Visa is commonly cited at 5–10 working days.
